Choose Kind...

"When you have an opportunity to be right or be kind, choose kind", Wonder. RJ Palacio.  That's the buzz in our middle school since we started reading this life changing novel.  Meet Auggie Pulman, a 10 year old boy who was born with a rare genetic disorder that has caused him to have severe facial deformities.  Wonder has sparked the most thoughtful discussions in our Middle School. The kids are truly enjoying every minute of this novel.  Check out some of our reflections and words of encouragement to August from my class.

  2. Today I can see the pictures! I hope you all get a chance to read Julian's Chapter after. It is really interesting to see same story from a different perspective.

  4. The 4th grade has a question for Michela: Why do your people only have one eye in your drawings? Also could you share the song Wonder with us? We are not familiar with it. Hannah read the book wonder and says it was fantastic!

  5. Hi fourth grade. This is Michela and Paul from eighth grade. In my picture the characters only have one eye. If you look at the cover of Wonder August is drawn with one eye. At the beginning of each part the characters are also drawn with one eye. P.S. We are looking for the link to Natalie Merchant's song Wonder.

  6. Hey Kyle-- what is the "cheese touch"?

    1. Hi Holly, the cheese touch is from the Diary of the Wimpy kids stories. It is like a game of don't touch a person because they have cooties. It's not a very nice game. Thanks for writing.

  7. Dear Mrs Meyer's Class,
I am so glad you are learning about all different kinds of people. We don't all look the same but we all want to be loved and respected for who we are. As a Pediatric Nurse, I have worked with many children with deformities. They are just like you on the inside. I think you must have a wonderful teacher that is helping you learn these lessons.
Thanks you for your hard work on making the world a good place for everyone,
    Ms SueAnne Meyer Clark

    1. Thank you Mrs. Clark for your comment. We are learning so much about the main character's syndrome. The author says that it is something like Treacher Collins Syndrome. Sincerely, Mrs. Meyers Middle School students.

  9. Michela, The 4th grade looked at the pictures in the book and we were wondering why you think the author drew them this way? We heard that Julian's story has two eyes. We thought that was interesting

    1. Hi fourth grade. That is a great question. The author said that the characters have only one eye to represent the struggles that each has seeing Auggie for who he really is. That includes Auggie too.

  10. Dear Mrs. Meyer's Class,

Thank you for sharing your beautiful work and thoughts on what seems to be a novel worth reading. Love how you paired it with Natalie Merchant's song (she has been a long time favorite of mine). I think I may pick up a copy of the book for myself.

  12. Hi Amanda! The words you wrote to August are very kind. Have you ever said something like that to a friend or fellow student when they were feeling sad about being different or bullied?
